Nose: Soft, creamy toffee leads the way before giving ground to bright orchard fruits. Notes of roasted pistachio mingle with lemon zest, ripe peach, apricot and melon, while subtle hints of heather honey, milk chocolate and gentle oak spice drift in the background.
Palate: Vibrant and youthful, with an energetic burst of citrus. Sharp lemon and grapefruit are balanced by dark chocolate, toasted oak and drying woodland herbs, creating a lively, structured profile with plenty of character.
Finish: Long and dry, carrying lingering dark chocolate, cracked coriander seed, cinnamon bark and warming oak spice.
Comments: A cask with genuine promise and plenty of personality. The vibrant fruit character of Glenburgie's spirit remains firmly at its core, framed by youthful oak influence that brings structure and energy. With additional sympathetic maturation, the brighter citrus notes have every opportunity to evolve into deeper orchard and dried fruit complexities, producing a more layered and beautifully integrated whisky. Glenburgie is a large Speyside distillery whose production of over 4m litres per year is almost entirely destined for the Ballantine’s blend. The distillery’s association with Ballantine’s goes back as far as the 1930s when Glenburgie was brought out of mothballs by new owner Hiram Walker. As well as its traditional pot-distilled whisky, Glenburgie made a separate spirit called Glencraig on a pair of Lomond stills from 1958-1981. Chivas Brothers (Pernod Ricard) bought Glenburgie in 2005 following a major reconstruction during which the distillery was completely demolished and rebuilt.
Official bottlings of Glenburgie have always been extremely rare due to its importance to Ballantine’s, although a handful of new official bottlings under the Ballantine’s brand have appeared since 2017. Gordon & MacPhail have been releasing licensed bottlings of Glenburgie since the 1980s and other independent bottlings (including some excellent Glencraigs) have become more frequent in recent years.
A private bottling is a cask of single malt or single grain whisky that has been bottled privately by its owner or owners, and usually bottles are not released for public sale. Private bottlings may sometimes be bottled for their owners by the distillery of origin, but are not official bottlings by that distillery.
Alternatively, if the cask is not housed at the distillery where it was made, it may be bottled either by another distillery or private cask storage facility, or transported to a third party commercial bottler.
Private bottlings used to be relatively common, a legacy of the whisky lake of the 1980s, when distilleries had excess stock and were desperate to offload their inventory. These kinds of casks rarely make it to private bottlings nowadays - casks that were very inexpensive twenty or thirty years ago have shot up in value, and distilleries have scrambled to buy back privately-owned casks of their own spirit, while cask owners are rarely short of offers from brokers or independent bottlers.
