Caledonian 1976 - 2011. 34 Year Old. Bottled by the Dead Whisky Society. Cask number 900015. One of 295 bottles. 70cl. 54%. In presentation box.
Distilled on 10th April 1976 and bottled in March 2011 after 34 years of maturation, this outstanding single grain whisky was produced at the long-lost Caledonian Distillery in Edinburgh. Bottled by the Dead Whisky Society at its natural cask strength of 54% ABV from cask #900015, just 295 bottles were released.
Founded in 1855, Caledonian was one of Scotland's most important grain distilleries and, at its peak, one of the country's largest whisky producers. Affectionately known as "The Cally", it supplied grain whisky for many of Scotland's most famous blends before production ceased in 1988. The distillery was demolished a decade later, ensuring that every remaining cask represents a finite and increasingly scarce piece of Scotch whisky history.
The Dead Whisky Society was established to celebrate lost Scottish distilleries by bottling exceptional single cask whiskies from sites that had closed or disappeared. Their releases were produced in very limited quantities, with each bottling serving as a tribute to a vanished chapter of Scotland's distilling heritage. Although the company itself is no longer operating, its bottlings remain highly regarded, with each release representing a lasting memorial to Scotland's lost distilleries.
The Caledonian grain whisky distillery was constructed in Edinburgh in 1855 by Menzies & Co. and joined the fledgling cartel Distillers Company Limited in 1884, by which time Caledonian was already producing around 9 million litres of spirit a year and was one of the largest distilleries in Scotland.
In the 20th century, Caledonian survived a Luftwaffe strike on its Haymarket warehouses in 1940 that resulted in a major fire, but closed soon after the notorious 1986 merger of DCL and Guinness that created United Distillers. Caledonian was shuttered in 1988, and the majority of the distillery’s buildings have since been converted into housing. Indie casks of Caledonian appeared regularly in the 2010s but are now uncommon.
Independent bottler Dead Whisky Society was founded by Scottish entrepreneur Laura Greig Conway in 2003. The company released only six whiskies in their short history, beginning in 2003 with a 1975 Dallas Dhu and ending with a Cambus 1983 and Caledonian 1976 that appeared in spring 2011. In between came a trio of Banff vintage casks released between 2006-2008.
Nevertheless, Dead Whisky Society is known to most whisky fans thanks to the extraordinary quality of each of the six whiskies it released. The company’s concept was to bottle great whiskies from Scotland’s lost distilleries, and by that criterion they succeeded - the Banff 1971 and the two grain whiskies are recognised as some of the finest expressions from their respective distilleries ever bottled.

Due to the age and nature of collectible spirits, natural deterioration may occur over time, including evaporation, ullage, leakage, cork deterioration, capsule degradation, label wear and oxidation. The condition of the liquid, closure, seal and packaging is entirely at the buyer's discretion and risk. Whisky-Online Auctions makes no warranty as to the drinkability, taste, quality or suitability for consumption of any Lot.
All bottles are inspected prior to sale and, unless otherwise stated, are sealed. However, Whisky-Online Auctions cannot guarantee the integrity of any cork, seal, stopper or closure.
Images form part of the description and depict the actual Lot being offered. Where visible, fill levels will be shown in the images and/or description. If the filling level is impossible to determine, such as with ceramics decanters, we will provide an overall weight of the decanter in KG. Information relating to bottle age, bottling period, vintage, provenance, rarity and historical background is provided to the best of our knowledge based on available research and industry experience. Any date or bottling period assigned to a Lot represents our opinion at the time of cataloguing and should not be considered a guarantee or warranty.
Any questions relating to condition, authenticity, provenance, fill level, dating or packaging must be raised before bidding. Questions or concerns raised after a bid has been placed, after the auction has ended, or after a Lot has been won will not constitute grounds for cancelling a bid, refusing payment or disputing the sale.
