Jean-Baptiste Camus founded a collective named La Grande Marque with several other grower-producers in 1863, but soon bought out his partners and renamed the business Camus La Grande Marque. After his death in 1894 his sons took over, winning the patronage of Tsar Nicholas II and beginning a long and fruitful relationship with Russia. Camus was an early entrant into the Duty Free market in the 1960s, marketing Baccarat crystal and Limoge ceramic decanters with great success.
Camus is based in Borderies, the smallest Cognac appellation, and introduced the first ever 100% Borderies XO Cognac in 2000. Today, Camus is well-established in the first rank of prestige Cognac marques outside the Big Four producers, and has remained independent and under family control for five generations.
