A superb old independent bottling of Caol Ila, distilled in 1975 and matured for 22 years before being bottled by Hart Brothers as part of their Finest Collection. Bottled at 43%, this dates from an era when independently bottled Caol Ila carrying the distillery's name was far less commonplace than it is today.
Hart Brothers was established in 1988 by brothers Donald and Iain Hart, later joined by their brother Alistair, and developed a strong reputation for sourcing and bottling mature single malt whiskies. The Finest Collection became particularly well regarded for its selection of long-aged and vintage malts from across Scotland.
Caol Ila from the 1970s has developed an excellent reputation, with surviving bottlings offering rare opportunities to explore the distillery's whisky from an earlier period of production.
Founded in 1846, Caol Ila distillery was taken over by Diageo forerunner DCL in 1927. The distillery was completely rebuilt in 1972-74 and now produces over 6 million litres annually, much of which goes into Johnnie Walker. The widespread belief that Caol Ila is Islay’s most underrated distillery has become a truth so universally acknowledged that it may no longer be true, though it remains in the shadow of Bowmore and the south coast distilleries.
Official Caol Ilas were bottled sporadically before Diageo relaunched it as a single malt brand in 2002. A famous yellow label 12-year-old and a rare 15-year-old occasionally appeared under DCL’s Bulloch & Lade subsidiary from the 1960s onwards, and there was a short-lived Flora & Fauna 15-year-old in the late 1980s and a magnificent sherried 15-year-old Manager’s Dram bottled in 1990. Independent Caol Ila is abundant and always great value.
One of the unsung heroes of the independent whisky bottling scene, Hart Brothers started life in the 1960s as independent blenders and whisky brokers, and began bottling single malts themselves in the late 1980s. Hart Brothers have often flown under the radar, but a glance at their bottling history reveals some truly outstanding single malt whiskies from distilleries including Bowmore, Macallan, Longmorn, Springbank and Glen Grant.
Hart Brothers have a quiet tradition of getting their hands on unusual or difficult to source whiskies and releasing them with little fanfare which continues to this day, with recent releases including 1980s vintages of Littlemill and Macallan and a sherry cask of Talisker 1993. At auction, they are a bottler always worth looking out for, particularly for the magnificent 1950s and 1960s Bowmores and their superb 1960s Glenfiddichs.

All bottles are inspected prior to sale and, unless otherwise stated, are sealed. However, Whisky-Online Auctions cannot guarantee the integrity of any cork, seal, stopper or closure.
Images form part of the description and depict the actual Lot being offered. Where visible, fill levels will be shown in the images and/or description. If the filling level is impossible to determine, such as with ceramics decanters, we will provide an overall weight of the decanter in KG. Information relating to bottle age, bottling period, vintage, provenance, rarity and historical background is provided to the best of our knowledge based on available research and industry experience. Any date or bottling period assigned to a Lot represents our opinion at the time of cataloguing and should not be considered a guarantee or warranty.
Any questions relating to condition, authenticity, provenance, fill level, dating or packaging must be raised before bidding. Questions or concerns raised after a bid has been placed, after the auction has ended, or after a Lot has been won will not constitute grounds for cancelling a bid, refusing payment or disputing the sale.
