Alfred Dunhill began trading in 1893 after inheriting his father’s saddlery business, soon diversifying into luxury automobile accessories. After opening a shop in Mayfair in London in 1902 he invented the Windshield Pipe that could be smoked while driving, and thereafter moved further into tobacco products, opening a tobacconist in St. James’s in 1907 and producing a range of high quality branded goods.
Dunhill’s business earned a Royal Warrant before his retirement in the late 1920s, and by the 1980s had become a luxury goods empire with thousands of branded products including clothing, leather goods and cigarettes. Dunhill’s whisky was a deluxe blend made by International Distillers & Vintners, and was said to contain malts and grain whiskies aged from 8 to 20 years old.
