Eden Mill was founded in 2012 in the Lowland village of Guardbridge, a short distance from St. Andrews. The name refers to the location - a disused paper mill near the estuary of the river Eden. Starting out as a brewery, Eden Mill added three small alembic stills in 2014, becoming the first new distillery in St. Andrews since the 1860 closure of the Haig family’s Seggie distillery on the same site.
Eden Mill’s distillation operations include the production of both whisky and gin; the first single malt whisky release appeared in 2018. Eden Mill’s success led to the Inverleith private equity firm taking a majority stake in 2022, and the following year the company began construction of a new larger distillery on the University of St. Andrews’ Eden campus. The new Eden Mill distillery is expected to begin production late in 2025.

Distillery bottlings are, as the name suggests, bottled by or for the distillery from which the whisky has originated and are thus often referred to as Official Bottlings or OBs. Distillery bottlings are generally more desirable for collectors and usually fetch higher prices at auction than independent bottlings. They are officially-endorsed versions of the whisky from a particular distillery and are therefore considered the truest expression of the distillery’s character.
This ideal of the distillery character is regarded so seriously by the distilleries and brand owners that casks of whisky that are considered to vary too far from the archetype are frequently sold on to whisky brokers and independent bottlers. When this happens, it is often with the proviso that the distillery’s name is not allowed to be used when the cask is bottled for fear of diminishing or damaging the distillery’s character and status.
