A remarkable single cask Glenfiddich 1964 37-year-old bottled by Ian Macleod in 2001. This full strength indie Glenfiddich matured in a sherry hogshead cask that was evidently extremely active, judging by the deep chestnut colour of the spirit, which was bottled at its exceptionally potent natural cask strength of 58.7%. This was one of a number of very unusual long-aged, heavily sherried Glenfiddich casks that slipped out to independent bottlers around the turn of the millennium - all are superb.
Glenfiddich distillery was built in 1886 by William Grant and is still owned by his family descendants today. Glenfiddich played a major role in the history of Scotch whisky, as the first distillery to commercialise its own official bottlings of single malt whisky on a major scale in the early 1960s. This move was to shape the industry up to the present day, and Glenfiddich has remained the world’s best-selling single malt whisky.
It’s unlikely William Grant would recognise Glenfiddich today: since the 2020 reconstruction, the distillery now has a remarkable 43 stills making over 20 million litres of alcohol per annum. The core range official bottlings are frequently augmented by small batch limited editions; independent bottlings are almost non-existent. The exceptionally rare 1937 vintage released in 2001 is probably the most sought-after Glenfiddich, though early and/or long-aged vintage expressions also do well at auction.
Founded in 1933, Ian Macleod Distillers are rather low profile despite being the 10th-largest Scotch whisky company in the world. The company is one of the largest suppliers of own-brand whiskies to bulk markets, with a diverse range of proprietary and independent bottling brands including Smokehead, Chieftain’s Choice and Isle of Skye. The company also produces a variety of gins, vodkas and rums including Edinburgh Gin.
Ian Macleod acquired the Glengoyne distillery and the Langs whisky brands in 2003, changing the company name to Ian Macleod Distillers. Tamdhu distillery was purchased in 2011 and relaunched in 2013, while in October 2017 it was announced that Ian Macleod Distillers had acquired and were rebuilding the lost Lowland distillery Rosebank - a stunning coup that gladdened the hearts of whisky fans the world over. After an extensive refurbishment, production at Rosebank recommenced in summer 2023.

All bottles are inspected prior to sale and, unless otherwise stated, are sealed. However, Whisky-Online Auctions cannot guarantee the integrity of any cork, seal, stopper or closure.
Images form part of the description and depict the actual Lot being offered. Where visible, fill levels will be shown in the images and/or description. If the filling level is impossible to determine, such as with ceramics decanters, we will provide an overall weight of the decanter in KG. Information relating to bottle age, bottling period, vintage, provenance, rarity and historical background is provided to the best of our knowledge based on available research and industry experience. Any date or bottling period assigned to a Lot represents our opinion at the time of cataloguing and should not be considered a guarantee or warranty.
Any questions relating to condition, authenticity, provenance, fill level, dating or packaging must be raised before bidding. Questions or concerns raised after a bid has been placed, after the auction has ended, or after a Lot has been won will not constitute grounds for cancelling a bid, refusing payment or disputing the sale.
