Glenlivet 1971 - 1999. 27 Year Old. Bottled by The Scotch Malt Whisky Society. Society cask number 2.32. Prunes & Chocolate. Matured in a First Fill Sherry Butt. 70cl. 54.2%. 94.8 Proof. No box.
A very dark single cask Glenlivet 1971 27-year-old bottled by the Scotch Malt Whisky Society in 1999 with the SMWS code 2.32 and title ‘Prunes and Chocolate’. As you’ve probably already surmised, this was a first fill sherry butt of Glenlivet’s 1971 vintage and as this is the SMWS we’re talking about it’s been bottled without colouring or chill filtration at its natural cask strength, which in this case was 54.2%. There were apparently 507 bottles of this gorgeous-looking dram bottled back in 1999 - we’d wager there’s not too many left today.

One of Scotland’s iconic distilleries, Glenlivet is currently the joint largest single malt whisky distillery in Scotland at 21m litres per annum. The distillery was expanded in 2010, raising the number of stills to fourteen, before the construction of a third stillhouse in 2018 brought the total number of stills to 28. Having achieved production parity with Glenfiddich, Glenlivet is now catching their rival in sales terms as well and may soon become the biggest-selling single malt whisky in the world.
Glenlivet has rarely been independently bottled, but the official releases are sufficiently plentiful and diverse that this isn’t an issue. Glenlivet ages well in both bourbon and sherry casks, and a raft of official releases at various strengths, ages and cask types are available to satisfy the pickiest whisky buyers. At auction the old 1950s and 1960s vintages bottled for the Cellar Collection are always worth looking out for.
The Scotch Malt Whisky Society (SMWS) began in late 1970s Edinburgh when founder Pip Hills persuaded a group of friends to chip in for a cask of Glenfarclas, and was officially formalised in 1983. Today the SMWS has two venues in Edinburgh, a London bar and a string of international partnerships serving its 35,000 members.
The Society’s whiskies are known for their unique SMWS coding system. Each cask bottled is assigned two numbers, representing the distillery and the bottling number, so 1.45 is the forty-fifth cask bottled from the first distillery and 33.27 is the 27th cask from the 33rd distillery.
Glenmorangie bought the Society in 2004, but sold it in 2015 to a private consortium who floated the SMWS on the stock market in 2021 via their holding company Artisanal Spirits Co.
