The House of Lords Scotch Whisky brand was created by whisky merchant and blender William Whiteley, a colourful character who made a fortune smuggling his whiskies to the Mafia during Prohibition. Whiteley had previously been sacked from Edinburgh blenders James Munro for shady export deals and already had one bankruptcy under his belt before hitting the jackpot with his King’s Ransom brand in 1928.
Whiteley’s House of Lords blend was very popular in export markets, but could not be sold in Britain as Whiteley had never asked for permission to use the House of Lords name. Whiteley bought Edradour in 1933 before selling his business five years later to an associate of his Mafia smugglers. Today, most of Whiteley’s brands are owned by Pernod-Ricard, while House of Lords whisky now has official approval and is made by Gordon & MacPhail.
