Jack Daniel's 1981 Gold Medal is the seventh release in the distillery's Gold Medal series, created to commemorate the award received at the 1981 Monde Selection competition, with the presentation ceremonies held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
The award marked Jack Daniel's return to international competition after a 27-year absence, following its Star of Excellence in Brussels in 1954. Much had changed during the intervening years: the Motlow family sold the distillery to Brown-Forman in 1956, while sales continued to grow rapidly, increasing around tenfold during the 1960s and 1970s as Jack Daniel's developed into an internationally recognised Tennessee whiskey.
In 1981, Jack Daniel's entered the Brussels-based Monde Selection's Institute for Quality Selections, where it was awarded the organisation's highest distinction, the Grand Gold Medal with Palm Leaves. The award was presented at ceremonies held in Amsterdam and is commemorated by this special limited edition bottling.
Bottled at 45% ABV, this is one of a series of commemorative Jack Daniel's bottlings celebrating the historic medals and awards received by the distillery.
Jasper ‘Jack’ Daniel was born in Tennessee around 1850. Orphaned as a child, the young Daniel fell in with a local preacher and moonshiner, Dan Call, and was taught distilling by one of Call’s slaves, Nathan ‘Nearest’ Green. Call and Daniel subsequently set up their own distillery in Lynchburg, employing Green (who had been emancipated after the Civil War) as Master Distiller. Daniel became sole owner of the distillery in 1884; Green’s descendants have now worked at the distillery for seven generations.
Daniel passed the distillery to his nephews, including Lem Motlow, before his death in 1911. Motlow soon became sole owner, but the distillery was closed for most of the next few decades due to state and national Prohibition statutes. Jack Daniel’s distillery finally reopened in 1947, just months before Motlow’s death; in 1956 his children sold the company to Brown Forman, who have built Jack Daniel’s into one of the world’s biggest-selling whiskey brands.
Distillery bottlings are, as the name suggests, bottled by or for the distillery from which the whisky has originated and are thus often referred to as Official Bottlings or OBs. Distillery bottlings are generally more desirable for collectors and usually fetch higher prices at auction than independent bottlings. They are officially-endorsed versions of the whisky from a particular distillery and are therefore considered the truest expression of the distillery’s character.
This ideal of the distillery character is regarded so seriously by the distilleries and brand owners that casks of whisky that are considered to vary too far from the archetype are frequently sold on to whisky brokers and independent bottlers. When this happens, it is often with the proviso that the distillery’s name is not allowed to be used when the cask is bottled for fear of diminishing or damaging the distillery’s character and status.

Due to the age and nature of collectible spirits, natural deterioration may occur over time, including evaporation, ullage, leakage, cork deterioration, capsule degradation, label wear and oxidation. The condition of the liquid, closure, seal and packaging is entirely at the buyer's discretion and risk. Whisky-Online Auctions makes no warranty as to the drinkability, taste, quality or suitability for consumption of any Lot.
All bottles are inspected prior to sale and, unless otherwise stated, are sealed. However, Whisky-Online Auctions cannot guarantee the integrity of any cork, seal, stopper or closure.
Images form part of the description and depict the actual Lot being offered. Where visible, fill levels will be shown in the images and/or description. If the filling level is impossible to determine, such as with ceramics decanters, we will provide an overall weight of the decanter in KG. Information relating to bottle age, bottling period, vintage, provenance, rarity and historical background is provided to the best of our knowledge based on available research and industry experience. Any date or bottling period assigned to a Lot represents our opinion at the time of cataloguing and should not be considered a guarantee or warranty.
Any questions relating to condition, authenticity, provenance, fill level, dating or packaging must be raised before bidding. Questions or concerns raised after a bid has been placed, after the auction has ended, or after a Lot has been won will not constitute grounds for cancelling a bid, refusing payment or disputing the sale.
By placing a bid, bidders confirm that they have reviewed the description and images, sought any additional information they require, and are satisfied with the Lot. All sales are final except where required otherwise by law or under the Whisky-Online Auctions Terms and Conditions.
