James Buchanan got his start in the whisky business in 1879 at the age of thirty, moving to London from Scotland to work for blenders Charles Mackinlay & Co. The ambitious Buchanan soon set himself up as an independent cask broker and blender, with his tireless hard work and flair for salesmanship securing a prestigious contract with the House of Commons. Buchanan’s House of Commons blend eventually became known as Black and White, due to its distinctive black glass bottle and white label.
Buchanan expanded his business internationally, built the Glentauchers distillery in 1898 and continued acquiring distilleries in the early years of the 20th century. Buchanan entered into a strategic partnership with Dewar’s during WWI and amalgamated with Distilleries Company Ltd (DCL) in 1925, by which time he was Lord Woolavington and had interests in over a dozen distilleries. Buchanan’s and Black & White remain important export blends for Diageo today.
