A rare old half bottle of Redbreast 12-year-old Irish whiskey, produced from John Jameson & Son whiskey and matured and bottled by Gilbeys of Ireland.
This example dates from the 1960s. During this period Redbreast was a traditional single pot still Irish whiskey, distilled at John Jameson & Son's famous Bow Street distillery in Dublin. Whiskey production at Bow Street ceased in 1971 following the consolidation of production at the new Midleton Distillery in County Cork.
Gilbeys had a long relationship with John Jameson & Son, purchasing Jameson whiskey and maturing it in their own casks before bottling it under the Redbreast name. Redbreast itself first appeared in the early 20th century and became one of the best-known names associated with traditional Irish pot still whiskey.
Of particular interest is the surviving Aer Lingus Irish Air Lines sticker on the reverse, indicating an association with Ireland's national airline and suggesting this half bottle was supplied or retailed for airline use.
A particularly interesting early half bottle of Redbreast from the era when the whiskey was still being produced at Jameson's original Bow Street distillery.
Bow Street Distillery in Dublin was the historic home of John Jameson & Son and one of the great names of Irish whiskey. Jameson acquired the distillery in 1780, and during the 19th century Bow Street developed into a vast whiskey-making complex, producing traditional Irish pot still whiskey using a mixture of malted and unmalted barley.
At its height, Bow Street was among the largest distilleries in Ireland, with its whiskey exported around the world under the Jameson name. The distillery remained committed to pot still production even as the Irish whiskey industry contracted dramatically during the 20th century.
Production at Bow Street finally ceased in 1971 following the consolidation of Jameson, Powers and Cork Distilleries into Irish Distillers. Distillation was transferred to the new Midleton Distillery in County Cork, which opened in 1975. Surviving Bow Street-distilled whiskey is now particularly scarce, appearing mainly in old Jameson and Redbreast bottlings and occasional releases of mature historic stocks.
Redbreast is one of Ireland’s most historic whiskey brands, with its origins in the traditional whiskey bonding trade of Dublin. The name first appeared officially in 1912, when wine and spirits merchant W & A Gilbey sold Redbreast J.J. Liqueur Whiskey, a 12-year-old whiskey sourced from John Jameson & Son’s famous Bow Street distillery. Gilbey supplied its own casks, including sherry casks from its wine business, and matured and bottled the whiskey under its own name.
Redbreast remained a Bow Street pot still whiskey until the distillery closed in 1971, with the final Gilbey’s bottling appearing in 1985. The brand subsequently passed to Irish Distillers and was relaunched in 1991, now using whiskey produced at Midleton Distillery in County Cork.
Today, Redbreast remains dedicated primarily to traditional Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey, produced from malted and unmalted barley and triple-distilled in copper pot stills. Alongside the famous 12 Year Old, the range has expanded to include older age statements, cask-strength editions and numerous limited releases.

Due to the age and nature of collectible spirits, natural deterioration may occur over time, including evaporation, ullage, leakage, cork deterioration, capsule degradation, label wear and oxidation. The condition of the liquid, closure, seal and packaging is entirely at the buyer's discretion and risk. Whisky-Online Auctions makes no warranty as to the drinkability, taste, quality or suitability for consumption of any Lot.
All bottles are inspected prior to sale and, unless otherwise stated, are sealed. However, Whisky-Online Auctions cannot guarantee the integrity of any cork, seal, stopper or closure.
Images form part of the description and depict the actual Lot being offered. Where visible, fill levels will be shown in the images and/or description. If the filling level is impossible to determine, such as with ceramics decanters, we will provide an overall weight of the decanter in KG. Information relating to bottle age, bottling period, vintage, provenance, rarity and historical background is provided to the best of our knowledge based on available research and industry experience. Any date or bottling period assigned to a Lot represents our opinion at the time of cataloguing and should not be considered a guarantee or warranty.
Any questions relating to condition, authenticity, provenance, fill level, dating or packaging must be raised before bidding. Questions or concerns raised after a bid has been placed, after the auction has ended, or after a Lot has been won will not constitute grounds for cancelling a bid, refusing payment or disputing the sale.
