A fantastic limited edition Karuizawa 1999/2000 Japanese single malt whisky sometimes known as Double Vintage Unique Cuvée, this was a small batch edition released to celebrate the 55th Anniversary of legendary Italian bottler Silvano Samaroli.
This special edition Karuizawa with the label comprises of real 24k gold leaf,
was the product of two individual oloroso sherry hogsheads from the 1999 and 2000 vintages that were married together and sent to Scotland, where they were finished in a Pedro Ximenez sherry cask that had previously held Caol Ila for the last months before bottling. Karuizawa 1999/2000 arrives in an olive wood box with a superb handblown glass decanter by renowned Murano glassmaker Simone Cenedese and was an edition of just 122 bottles at an impressive 56.5% natural cask strength.

The Karuizawa distillery was originally a winery built by Daikoku Budoshu in the mountains of the ski resort town of the same name in Japan’s Nagano prefecture in 1935. In the 1950s direct-fired pot stills were added at Karuizawa and the distillery began making whisky in 1956, producing spirit for Daikoku’s Ocean blend.
Karuizawa tried to emulate the finest Scottish distilleries, using Golden Promise barley and high quality sherry casks. Sadly, with the domestic market in decline, Karuizawa ceased production in 2000 and was later demolished by owners Kirin, who bought Mercian in 2006. Soon afterwards, a series of extraordinary casks were bottled by Number One Drinks, and Karuizawa’s whiskies subsequently soared in value. In 2020 a new Karuizawa Distillers company fronted by Kavalan alumnus Ian Chang revealed that they would be building a distillery at Komoro near Karuizawa.

Samaroli is the most iconic of the legendary Italian independent whisky bottlers that helped shape the market for single malt whisky. Silvano Samaroli set up his spirits import business in 1968 and was an early champion of single cask bottlings and cask strength whiskies.
Samaroli moved into independent bottling at the end of the 1970s, initially with exclusive casks from Cadenhead’s, who subsequently bottled dozens of casks for Samaroli through their R. W. Duthie subsidiary. Samaroli incorporated his love for art onto his labels, giving his bottles a strikingly beautiful aesthetic.
Many of the single malt whiskies selected and released by Samaroli in the 1980s and ‘90s were old vintages from Scotland’s greatest distilleries, and several of these whiskies have now attained legendary status, commanding extraordinary prices at auction.
