LOT DESCRIPTION

Laphroaig 1968. 26 Year Old. Bottled by Hart Brothers. 70cl. 43%. No box.

An exceptionally rare Laphroaig 1968 26-year-old Islay single malt whisky released in the mid-1990s by independent bottlers Hart Brothers for their Rare Vintage range.

This 26-year-old Laphroaig 1968 is one of only a handful of known bottlings from the 1968 vintage, and appeared a few years after the more famous 1980s examples bottled by G&M for Sestante and Donini. Bottled at a characterful but easy-drinking 43%, this Hart Brothers Laphroaig 1968 enjoys a very lofty reputation thanks to the distillery’s gorgeous citrus and exotic fruit flavours, waxy palate, and minerally peatsmoke notes.

An iconic southern Islay distillery, Laphroaig is the benchmark for heavily-peated smoky single malt whisky. The distillery has been Islay’s most successful single malt for many decades now, so much so that in 1908, following a commercial dispute, White Horse’s Peter Mackie famously tried to create a copy of Laphroaig at Lagavulin, leading to the birth of Malt Mill.

Today, the most revered and sought-after Laphroaigs at auction fall broadly into two camps: the old official bottlings of Laphroaig 10-year-old from the late 1960s-1980s; and the extraordinary independent bottlings of 1960s and early 1970s vintages by Gordon & MacPhail, Signatory, Cadenhead’s and the Italian bottlers Samaroli and Intertrade. The common denominator in these legendary bottlings is a remarkably fruity character alongside the phenolic bombast - sadly this fruitiness is no longer found in Laphroaig’s modern distillate.

One of the unsung heroes of the independent whisky bottling scene, Hart Brothers started life in the 1960s as independent blenders and whisky brokers, and began bottling single malts themselves in the late 1980s. Hart Brothers have often flown under the radar, but a glance at their bottling history reveals some truly outstanding single malt whiskies from distilleries including Bowmore, Macallan, Longmorn, Springbank and Glen Grant.

Hart Brothers have a quiet tradition of getting their hands on unusual or difficult to source whiskies and releasing them with little fanfare which continues to this day, with recent releases including 1980s vintages of Littlemill and Macallan and a sherry cask of Talisker 1993. At auction, they are a bottler always worth looking out for, particularly for the magnificent 1950s and 1960s Bowmores and their superb 1960s Glenfiddichs.

DISCLAIMER

Although a condition report is normally included in the Lot description, we do recommend viewing/close inspection prior to placing any bids.
