The Isle of Skye blended whisky brand was created by the Skye-based blender Ian Macleod in the 1930s. Isle of Skye has remained a popular brand with in-the-know whisky fans, with the malt content of the blend containing a significant proportion of Talisker, which until the recent arrival of Torabhaig was Skye’s only distillery.
Ian Macleod & Co. was acquired in 1963 by Peter J. Russell & Co. Ltd, and the Russell family remain in charge today, renaming their company Ian Macleod Distillers after buying Glengoyne, Tamdhu and, most recently, Rosebank. The oldest Isle of Skye whiskies were a handful of 50-year-old editions bottled in the early 2000s, while the core range Isle of Skye 8-year-old and 12-year-old have been joined in recent years by 18-year-old, 21-year-old, 25-year-old and 30-year-old limited editions.
