Claude Moët founded his champagne house in Épernay in 1743, which became Moët et Chandon 90 years later when Pierre-Gabriel Chandon was made a partner by his father-in-law Jean-Rémy Moët. The latter was Claude Moët’s grandson and the driving force behind the company’s transformation into an international brand in the mid-19th century. The family name Moët, incidentally, has Dutch origins, so the ‘t’ is pronounced.
In 1927, Champagne Mercier gifted their inactive Dom Pérignon brand to the Moët family. Moët et Chandon launched Dom Pérignon as their prestige cuvée in 1936 - the first release was the 1921 vintage. Moët et Chandon merged with Hennessy cognac in 1971, and in 1987 Moët-Hennessy joined forces with Louis Vuitton to form the LVMH luxury conglomerate, which is now Europe’s largest company, valued at $500 billion in April 2023. Moët-Hennessy is the drinks division of the group and is 34% owned by Diageo.
