Springbank is one of the giants of the Scotch whisky world, an independently-owned distillery dedicated to preserving the traditional methods of distillation. For a long time Springbank was flying the flag for Campbeltown whisky almost alone but the distillery’s fortunes have improved since the 1990s, and in 2000 Springbank expanded their operations with the purchase and subsequent reconstruction of the Glengyle distillery, home of Kilkerran.
The Springbank distillery produces three distinct single malt whiskies, with the regular lightly-peated Springbank malt complemented by the heavily-peated Longrow and the unpeated, triple-distilled Hazelburn. Of these secondary malts, Longrow has a longer history and more passionate fanbase, with the 1973/74 vintages in particular attracting eye-catching prices at auction. The standard Springbank spirit remains one of Scotland’s greatest whiskies, and auction prices for old bottles continue to rise.

The Bottlers is an Edinburgh-based independent whisky bottling offshoot from Leith wine merchants Raeburn Fine Wines, established by Zubair Mohamed in the 1980s. The Bottlers’s first single malt whiskies were launched in 1993, and the company released several dozen single cask bottlings before falling dormant in 2015. The Bottlers are noted for the outstanding quality of their cask selection and released all their whiskies as single casks bottled without colouring or chill filtration at their natural cask strengths.
The Bottlers distinguished themselves early on, with eye-catching 1990s releases including acclaimed bottlings of several 1960s vintage casks from Dalmore and Springbank and outstanding casks from unicorn lost distilleries Coleburn, Glenugie and Inverleven. By the early years of the new century a pair of glorious casks of 1981 Brora and several incredible Port Ellens had appeared, and the company’s reputation as one of the greatest indie bottlers of the golden era was secure.
