SS Politician Bottle - Believed Black & White

LOT ID: 900

End Date : Jan 08 2014 08:00 PM

LOT DESCRIPTION

1 bottle of Scotch Whisky believed to be Black & White retreived originally from the wreck of the SS Politician shortly after it ran aground on the Isle of Eriskay in February 1941. This bottle was one of many that were retireved from the cargo that washed ashore following the wreck and subsequently hidden by locals. This bottle was found by an Islander digging their garden path in 1997 and was subsequently submitted for sale to Christies in Glasgow at the time. The bottle is sold here with the original Christie's catalogue from the sale including invoices and other relevant documentation.  The bottle is missing all its labels and has a spring cap seal. The wax seal was added by Christies after the sale once it was noted that the level had begun to decrease. Level in the bottle is currently at the mid shoulder.  A remarkable piece of Scottish history with great provenance and a powerful story behind it. This is what whisky collecting is all about.  An article in the Herald detailing the sale at the time in 1997 can be read here:  http://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/spl/aberdeen/ss-politician-whisky-expected-to-fetch-up-to-600-1.370460 BIDDERS PLEASE NOTE: Although the wax and capsule on this bottle are intact we would reccommend collection of this bottle in person. Shipping is available for this bottle and, while every possible effort will be taken to ensure maximum security during transit, no guarantees can be given regarding leakage.

DISCLAIMER

Although a condition report is normally included in the Lot description, we do recommend viewing/close inspection prior to placing any bids. If this is not an option and you have questions beyond the offered description and images, please use the form below "Ask A Question" to make specific enquiries or to receive a more in-depth condition report. Otherwise, Lots will be sold as seen and described.
Please note: due to the various ages of bottles, corks and their seals, condition of liquid is at the buyer's discretion. And no claim can be lodged against failure/leakage in transit. All bottles are checked by our whisky specialists Wayne & Harrison Ormerod prior to any auction. We do not auction opened bottles so therefore all items are sealed unless stated under certain circumstances where seals were never issued by the producer.
No item is deemed new, however many items are generally in good condition. When this is not the case, we aim to mention any faults in the description. The images supplied are of the actual item you will receive. If the filling level of the liquid is not visible in the images provided, we aim to indicate the current position in the description. If the filling level is impossible to determine, such as with ceramics decanters, we will provide an overall weight of the decanter in KG. Our filling level guideline can be found here.
All information in this listing is provided to the best of our knowledge including when we chose to date the age of a bottle. If you are unhappy with the listing or believe there is an error/discrepancy, you should notify us immediately and we will address the Lot accordingly. Placing a bid confirms you have checked the Lot and are satisfied.
