A particularly rare independent bottling of St Magdalene, distilled on 13th February 1975 and bottled on 2nd April 1999 at 24 years old by The Dormant Distillery Company.
The Dormant Distillery Company was established to specialise exclusively in whisky from Scotland’s closed distilleries, and its bottlings are now seldom encountered. This St Magdalene was matured in a single oak cask and bottled at a substantial natural strength of 58.7%, without the addition of water or other additives.
St Magdalene, also widely known as Linlithgow after its home town in West Lothian, was one of the great lost Lowland distilleries. Founded in the late 18th century, it survived until 1983, when it was closed during the widespread rationalisation of the Scotch whisky industry, and the distilling equipment was subsequently dismantled.
An especially interesting early bottling of St Magdalene, drawn from whisky distilled eight years before the distillery closed. Just 96 bottles were produced from the single cask, making this a scarce example from both St Magdalene and the short-lived Dormant Distillery Company.
St. Magdalene distillery (sometimes known as Linlithgow) is one of the greatest and most sorely missed of the lost Lowland distilleries. The distillery’s 1983 closure attracted little outcry but a handful of extraordinary Rare Malts bottlings in the late 1990s brought home the scale of the loss. Thankfully, a great many casks of St. Magdalene/Linlithgow have appeared from independent bottlers, with high strength versions by Cadenhead’s, SMWS, Douglas Laing and Gordon & MacPhail all performing well at auction.
St. Magdalene’s spirit, although sometimes showing a typical Lowland grassiness, was also frequently considerably more robust and austere than one would expect, with the pre-1975 vintages in particular displaying a minerally, oily waxiness more akin to the old Highland style malts than the soft Lowland archetype, while post-1975 vintages sometimes tend more towards elegance and fruitiness. A marvellous distillery that malt fans must try while bottlings still exist.
The Dormant Distillery Company is an independent Scotch whisky bottler with a particular focus on rare single malts from Scotland’s closed and silent distilleries. Established with the aim of celebrating whisky-making history that might otherwise be forgotten, the company sources mature casks from distilleries that are no longer in production and releases them in small quantities.
Its bottlings have included whiskies from some of Scotland’s most sought-after lost distilleries, with an emphasis on well-aged spirit and limited single-cask releases. The company’s name reflects this speciality, with each bottle offering a glimpse into a distillery and period of Scotch whisky production that can no longer be recreated.
The Dormant Distillery Company releases are particularly appealing to enthusiasts and collectors interested in closed distilleries, combining mature whisky with the increasingly scarce stocks remaining from Scotland’s lost whisky-making sites.
