Talisker 1940-1957 - Wolverhampton & Dudley - Sherry Cask

LOT ID: 358

End Date : Sep 05 2018 07:00 PM

LOT DESCRIPTION

1 bottle Talisker 1940 - 1957. Rare Old Liqueur Whisky. Sherry Cask. Bottle by Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries Ltd. Park Brewery, Wolverhampton. Short red branded screw cap. No box. No Capacity stated. 70 proof. Level in neck. Marks and torn label. An almost imaginary bottle of Talisker Whisky. From our research, this was distilled at Carbost, Isle Of Skye in February 1940 and filled into sherry casks that were left to mature for at least 17 years until it was bottled in March 1957. This bottle along with an identical example which can also be found in this sale was given to the vendor by their father over 30 years ago. They have been stored in what we assume could be their original wooden crate. The vendor believes that their father purchased a whole case of 12 and consumed 10 of them over the years.  It was very common back in the day for breweries to bottle Scotch whisky under their own label. These sort of whiskies rarely made it out of the town where they were supplied. They often made their way into local pubs, groceries and private households where they were consumed. I imagine a local artist design the very quirky and original label which states it's a RARE OLD LIQUEUR 70 PROOF and interestingly quotes ''IT'S A FINE SPEERIT THE TALISKER; THERE'S NO A PETTER MADE''. The label design itself is nothing like you see today; even the top of the cap is branded with FIDE DE FORTITUDINE meaning Fath & Fortitude. The liquid itself I can only imagine will be remarkable; Talisker from this period is virtually non-existent and those who have ever tasted any of the G&M bottlings from the 1940s will agree these will be equally as stunning if not better. A once in a lifetime opportunity!

DISCLAIMER

Although a condition report is normally included in the Lot description, we do recommend viewing/close inspection prior to placing any bids. If this is not an option and you have questions beyond the offered description and images, please use the form below "Ask A Question" to make specific enquiries or to receive a more in-depth condition report. Otherwise, Lots will be sold as seen and described.
Please note: due to the various ages of bottles, corks and their seals, condition of liquid is at the buyer's discretion. And no claim can be lodged against failure/leakage in transit. All bottles are checked by our whisky specialists Wayne & Harrison Ormerod prior to any auction. We do not auction opened bottles so therefore all items are sealed unless stated under certain circumstances where seals were never issued by the producer.
No item is deemed new, however many items are generally in good condition. When this is not the case, we aim to mention any faults in the description. The images supplied are of the actual item you will receive. If the filling level of the liquid is not visible in the images provided, we aim to indicate the current position in the description. If the filling level is impossible to determine, such as with ceramics decanters, we will provide an overall weight of the decanter in KG. Our filling level guideline can be found here.
All information in this listing is provided to the best of our knowledge including when we chose to date the age of a bottle. If you are unhappy with the listing or believe there is an error/discrepancy, you should notify us immediately and we will address the Lot accordingly. Placing a bid confirms you have checked the Lot and are satisfied.
