LOT DESCRIPTION

Tamnavulin 1968 - 2009. 40 Year Old. Bottled by Morrison & MacKay for their Carn Mor - Celebration Of The Cask. Cask number 3569. One of 335 bottles. 70cl. 40.6%. In wooden presentation frame.

A Tamnavulin 1968 released as part of the distillery's acclaimed "Celebration of the Cask" series. Distilled on 15th November 1968 and bottled on 7th May 2004 after 40 years of maturation, this single malt was drawn from a single hogshead and bottled at its natural strength of 40.6% ABV.

The "Celebration of the Cask" releases showcased some of Tamnavulin's oldest and most treasured casks, with each bottling presented as a genuine single cask expression. Distilled during the late 1960s—an era widely regarded as one of the great periods of Scotch whisky production—this whisky offers a fascinating glimpse into the character of mature Speyside malt from a bygone age.

A modern Speyside distillery, Tamnavulin was constructed by Invergordon in 1966 and survived the industry-wide slump of the 1980s before being mothballed in 1995 by new owners Whyte & MacKay.  Distillation recommenced in 2007 and following Whyte & MacKay’s subsequent acquisition by Emperador, Tamnavulin has finally been given some investment and marketing spend, with a string of single vintage and NAS official bottlings in updated packaging appearing over the last few years.

Generally speaking, independent bottlings are still the best way to discover the true potential of this very good but sadly overlooked distillery, although there was an extraordinary Macallan-esque 1966 cream sherry cask selected by the late Matthew Forrest for Japan in 2001 that appeared as a distillery bottling. Notable 1960s vintage editions appeared in the 1980s from Cadenhead’s and Moon Import, and 20-30 years later from The Whisky Agency and Douglas Laing, but Tamnavulin’s auction prices are generally very modest and great value for drinkers.

Càrn Mòr is a series of independent bottlings from Morrison Scotch Whisky Distillers (MSWD), the family company run by Brian Morrison, the former chairman of Morrison Bowmore, and his son Jamie Morrison. The company also owns the Old Perth blended whisky brand and commenced distillation at their new Lowland distillery Aberargie in 2017.

The first Càrn Mòr whiskies were bottled in 2007/8 and the Morrisons keep up a prolific bottling schedule, with several hundred Càrn Mòr releases to date. As of 2023, Càrn Mòr have two main ranges, the Càrn Mòr Strictly Limited series of youngish small batch whiskies bottled at 47.5%, and the Càrn Mòr Celebration of the Cask series, the majority of which are much older single cask whiskies bottled at cask strength.
