White Horse Cellar. Bottled 1956. By appointment to her majesty the Queen. Bakelite screw cap with branded lead foil capsule. No capacity stated although equal to 75cl. 70 proof. No box.
A superb old bottle of the iconic White Horse blended Scotch whisky. This edition was bottled in 1956, one of the last years of this particular presentation with the grey capsule and dark map at the top of the label, and mentions Lagavulin distillery and Glenlivet district, where Mackie’s Craigellachie distillery was located.
High quality blended whiskies in this period generally contained around 40-50% single malt whisky content, and as well as Lagavulin and Craigellachie, these beautiful old White Horse whiskies from the 1950s are a racing certainty to include malt whisky from the near-mythical Islay distillery Malt Mill, which was still active within the grounds of Lagavulin when this whisky was bottled.
White Horse is one of the classic blended Scotch whiskies. The brand’s name and famous logo come from the White Horse pub in Edinburgh, which was owned by the Mackie family from the mid-17th century until 1917. The Mackies bought Lagavulin in 1862 and the White Horse blend was introduced in 1890, the year after the legendary Peter Mackie had taken the reins of the family business.
Famously described as ‘one-third genius, one-third megalomaniac and one-third eccentric’, Peter Mackie caused a stir on Islay, famously building the Malt Mill distillery on the grounds of Lagavulin in 1908 in a fit of pique after a failed agency agreement with Laphroaig. Mackie’s business was renamed White Horse Distillers after his death in 1924 and was subsumed into Distillers Company Ltd in 1927. Sadly, White Horse is an export-only brand nowadays, but older bottles are still highly sought-after at auction.

All bottles are inspected prior to sale and, unless otherwise stated, are sealed. However, Whisky-Online Auctions cannot guarantee the integrity of any cork, seal, stopper or closure.
Images form part of the description and depict the actual Lot being offered. Where visible, fill levels will be shown in the images and/or description. If the filling level is impossible to determine, such as with ceramics decanters, we will provide an overall weight of the decanter in KG. Information relating to bottle age, bottling period, vintage, provenance, rarity and historical background is provided to the best of our knowledge based on available research and industry experience. Any date or bottling period assigned to a Lot represents our opinion at the time of cataloguing and should not be considered a guarantee or warranty.
Any questions relating to condition, authenticity, provenance, fill level, dating or packaging must be raised before bidding. Questions or concerns raised after a bid has been placed, after the auction has ended, or after a Lot has been won will not constitute grounds for cancelling a bid, refusing payment or disputing the sale.
