Crown Royal is one of the best-known Canadian whiskies, and is the best-selling Canadian whisky brand in the USA and many other markets. The Crown Royal brand was created in 1939 by Seagram’s Samuel Bronfman to commemorate the royal visit to Canada of King George VI and his wife Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. Crown Royal is distilled from a mash of corn, rye and malted barley, with five different mashbills and 12 columns making the fifty different spirit styles used for the blend.

Crown Royal’s Gimli distillery is by Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba. Gimli distillery was built in 1968 but only began producing Crown Royal in 1992 after the closure of Crown Royal’s original distillery, Waterloo, which had been Seagram’s main distillery since 1857. Crown Royal has been owned by Diageo since the Seagram empire was broken up in 2000.
