Bottling Year: 1950s

Category: Blended Whisky

Country: Scotland

John Dewar Sr set up his wine merchants in Perth in 1846, and began blending whisky in the 1860s. Dewar died in 1880, the year after his son John Alexander joined the business, and his other son Tommy joined in 1881. Dewar's expanded rapidly, with the exuberant Tommy proving to be a master salesman. Dewar’s was awarded a Royal Warrant from Queen Victoria in 1893 and founded Aberfeldy distillery in 1896.

In 1915, Dewar’s joined their interests with another major blender, John Buchanan & Son, before merging into Diageo forerunner Distillers Company Limited (DCL) in 1925. Dewar’s eventually became the best-selling blended Scotch whisky in America, and by the time the company was sold to Bacardi in 1998 as part of the deal that created Diageo its assets included the Craigellachie, Aultmore and Royal Brackla distilleries as well as Aberfeldy.
