Glen Grant 1949-1999 - 50 Year Old - Macleods Extremely Rare - Single Cask 3447

Glen Grant 1949 - 1999. 50 Year Old. Macleod's Extremely Rare. Cask number 3447. One of only 80 bottles from and Oloroso Sherry Cask. 70cl. 46.0%.

A stunning Glen Grant 1949 bottled at the turn of the millennium by Ian MacLeod Distillers at the grand old age of 50 years old. Just 80 bottles of this magnificent Glen Grant were yielded from a fabulous Oloroso sherry cask at its natural strength of 46%. This bottling has long flown under the radar, which is a shame as it's one of the most pristine examples of sherried Glen Grant we've ever tried.

Founded in 1840, Glen Grant is one of Speyside’s largest and greatest distilleries. The distillery became part of Seagram’s Chivas Brothers group in the 1970s, and was subsequently acquired in 2001 by Pernod Ricard, who sold Glen Grant to Campari in 2006.

Glen Grant’s association with Italy goes back much further, however. Gordon & MacPhail were already licensed bottlers of Glen Grant in the 1960s when the two companies began a highly beneficial relationship with Italian hotelier and importer Armando Giovinetti which led directly to Glen Grant’s ongoing dominance of the Italian single malt market.

Glen Grant’s spirit is particularly well-suited to very long ageing in both bourbon and sherry casks, making it the perfect fit for Gordon & MacPhail who released a 72-year-old Glen Grant in 2020 and whose semi-official licensed bottlings of Glen Grant are legendary. Indie Glen Grants are abundant and are generally excellent value.

Founded in 1933, Ian Macleod Distillers are rather low profile despite being the 10th-largest Scotch whisky company in the world.  The company is one of the largest suppliers of own-brand whiskies to bulk markets, with a diverse range of proprietary and independent bottling brands including Smokehead, Chieftain’s Choice and Isle of Skye.  The company also produces a variety of gins, vodkas and rums including Edinburgh Gin.

Ian Macleod acquired the Glengoyne distillery and the Langs whisky brands in 2003, changing the company name to Ian Macleod Distillers. Tamdhu distillery was purchased in 2011 and relaunched in 2013, while in October 2017 it was announced that Ian Macleod Distillers had acquired and were rebuilding the lost Lowland distillery Rosebank - a stunning coup that gladdened the hearts of whisky fans the world over. Production at Rosebank is scheduled to recommence in summer 2022.
