Glen Ord 1970-2004 - 33 Year Old - Douglas Laing - Old Malt Cask - Single Cask 526
Glen Ord 1970 - 2004. 33 Year Old. Bottled by Douglas Laing for their Old Malt Cask series. Cask number 526. One of 237 bottles matured in a Sherry Cask. 700ml. 50%.
A single cask Glen Ord 1970 bottled as a 33-year-old in 2004 without colouring or chill filtration by Douglas Laing for their Old Malt Cask series. This 33-year-old Glen Ord 1970 came from Cask 526, a sherry cask that yielded 237 bottles at the Old Malt Cask standard strength of 50%. Glen Ord were at the top of their game in the 1960s and early 1970s and of course the sherry casks back then were much higher quality, so this will be superb.

Glen Ord is a classic Highland distillery, originally built in 1838 and now producing an enormous 11 million litres per annum, making it one of the largest distilleries in Scotland. The distillery is also home to a huge industrial maltings facility supplying malted barley to various other Diageo distilleries including Talisker.
Sadly, Glen Ord’s characterful but easy-drinking single malt has been unavailable in the UK since 2006 when it was withdrawn and repackaged for Asian markets as the Singleton of Glen Ord. This tragedy notwithstanding, the distillery’s official bottlings have a good reputation among whisky drinkers, with the old 12-year-old and the long-aged Special Release bottlings from 2003-2005 particularly popular; however, the most famous Glen Ord is undoubtedly the Samaroli 1962 Ord Bouquet 22-year-old, one of the greatest single malt whiskies ever bottled.

Founded in the late 1940s by Fred Douglas Laing Sr, the Douglas Laing company spent decades as whisky blenders and exporters before Fred Laing’s sons Stewart and Fred Jr introduced the highly influential Old Malt Cask single malt range in 1998. The McGibbon’s Provenance and Old & Rare Platinum series followed soon afterwards, establishing Douglas Laing as one of Scotland’s finest independent bottlers.
In 2013 Stewart Laing left the business, taking Old Malt Cask and Old & Rare to his new company Hunter Laing, while Fred Laing Jr was joined by his daughter Cara and her husband Chris Leggatt from Morrison Bowmore. The Old Particular and Extra Old Particular ranges were introduced to replace Old Malt Cask and Old & Rare, and the company has since moved into distilling with the purchase of Strathearn distillery in 2019 and the construction of Clutha distillery in Glasgow.
