Glendronach 1962 - Gordon & MacPhail - Connoisseurs Choice

Glendronach 1962. Bottled by Gordon & MacPhail for their Connoisseur's Choice series. 75cl. 40%.

A fantastic vintage 1962 Glendronach, bottled by Gordon & MacPhail as part of their long-running Connoisseurs Choice range.

Distilled at Glendronach in 1962, this whisky originates from an especially interesting period in the distillery's history, when production remained firmly traditional and direct coal-fired stills were still in use. Glendronach would close temporarily in 1996 before returning to production in 2002, making these considerably earlier vintages increasingly sought after.

Gordon & MacPhail established their Connoisseurs Choice series in 1968, with the range becoming an important showcase for single malt whisky at a time when many distilleries were little known outside the blending trade. The company had longstanding relationships with Scottish distilleries, purchasing new-make spirit and maturing casks in its own warehouses for release many years later.

This example is presented with the classic map label, a Connoisseurs Choice design introduced in 1988 and represents one of the earliest examples to have been released in this particular era of the range.

Glendronach is one of the most prominent and important distilleries in Scotland’s Highlands. The distillery was founded in the 1920s but came to wider attention in the 1960s after being taken over by Teacher’s, for which it was to become a key malt. After a low period under the notoriously careless Allied Distillers, Glendronach was revived under Billy Walker, whose Benriach Distillery Co. bought the distillery in 2008.

Walker turned around Glendronach’s fortunes by the simple expedient of great cask selection, a high quality core range and prestige bottlings of vintage sherry casks, which were already plentiful in the distillery’s inventory. This good work has continued since Walker sold the distillery to Brown Forman in 2016. At auction, 1970s sherry casks and old Teacher’s-era Glendronach bottlings are always worth seeking out, although prices now reflect the distillery’s popularity.

Founded in Elgin as a merchant grocer and wine and spirits wholesaler in 1895, Gordon & MacPhail are one of the oldest independent whisky bottlers in Scotland. Co-founder James Gordon owned shares in Longmorn, Strathisla and Glen Grant, and Gordon & MacPhail were soon bottling officially licensed single malts from several distilleries and sending empty casks from their wine business to be filled with new make spirit and returned for maturation in their Elgin warehouses.

Gordon & MacPhail pioneered high strength single malts at 100 proof (57%) in the 1950s, and in 1968 the company launched Connoisseurs Choice, one of the first integrated ranges of small batch independent whisky bottlings. After finally becoming distillers themselves with the purchase of Benromach in 1993, in 2010 Gordon & MacPhail bottled the first 70-year-old single malt whisky (a Mortlach 1938) and in 2020 the company released the first ever 80-year-old whisky: Glenlivet 1940.
