Ledaig 2005-2010 - Berry Bros & Rudd - Berrys Own Selection - Single Cask 900008

Ledaig 2005 - 2010. 4 Year Old. Bottled by Berry Bros & Rudd for their Berry's Own Selection. Cask number 900008. 70cl. 62.7%.

A famous old bottle of young Ledaig, this ripsnorting 4-year-old was a single sherry cask from the 2005 vintage bottled in 2010 by Berry Brothers & Rudd. A monstrous dram released at its full cask strength of 62.7%, this Ledaig 2005 became a huge word of mouth hit after successful tastings at whisky festivals, playing a big part in Tobermory’s subsequent rise to cult status while kickstarting a craze for young heavily-sherried peaty whiskies.

Ledaig was the original name of the distillery in Tobermory village on the Isle of Mull, but the distillery was rechristened as Tobermory in 1979 during a troubled period of sporadic production that lasted until Burn Stewart purchased the distillery in 1993. The 1974 vintage of Ledaig is considered the distillery's finest and is highly sought after at auction.

Nowadays, Tobermory distillery produces both the Ledaig (peated) and Tobermory (unpeated) single malt spirits in a 50/50 ratio. Ledaig was officially relaunched as a 10-year-old in 2007, but the brand really took off in 2010 after a pair of wildly successful sherry casks of rubbery, farmhouse-tinged Ledaig 2005 were bottled at cask strength by Berry Bros & Rudd. Ledaig’s quirky flavours and occasionally brutal exuberance have spawned a committed cult following.

Founded in 1698, Berry Bros. & Rudd is the UK’s oldest wine and spirit merchant, with their iconic premises in St. James’ Street in London an institution in the drinks trade. Berry Brothers were among the first English merchants to bottle bespoke whiskies for sale in the 19th century and in 1923 they launched the Cutty Sark blended whisky which went on to great success in the United States in the post-Prohibition era.

Berry Bros continued to bottle single malt whiskies after WWII, with notable examples from Longmorn, Macallan, Glen Grant and Laphroaig (among others) occasionally cropping up at auction today. Since the late 1990s the company has expanded its spirits operations, briefly owned the rights to the Glenrothes single malt brand after selling Cutty Sark in 2010, and now have an adventurous range of expertly-selected single malts, blended malt whisky and rums.
