Black Bottle was introduced by the Aberdeen tea merchants and whisky blenders Charles, David and Gordon Graham Ltd in 1879. The company’s signature black glass bottle was of German origin, which necessitated a switch to green bottles in 1914. After being sold to Schenley Industries in 1959, Gordon Graham & Co. went through several changes in ownership before landing with Highland Distilleries in 1995.
Highland Distilleries reformulated Black Bottle as an Islay blend, using whisky from all seven working distilleries on Islay. After a brief spell with Edrington, Black Bottle was sold to Burn Stewart in 2003. Burn Stewart were acquired by Distell in 2013 and the following year Black Bottle was reformulated to dial back the smoke and return to its Highland malt-based roots - and was returned, after a century, to a black glass bottle.
